Muffler Cleaning Tips

Maintaining your muffler and keeping it clean is essential. Your vehicle’s muffler is included in the exhaust system, and its job is to expel poisonous and corrosive waste and to keep the vehicle quiet by canceling out noise. Because exhaust typically has a dark color, it is easy for the muffler to become dirty with time. If you keep up with muffler maintenance, the part will not only look great but it will also last for a while and perform better.

How to Handle a Dirty Muffler

There are a few steps to follow to clean your muffler right. They include:

  • Remove Excess Dirt: This is the first thing to do. With a lint-free cloth or a dry rag, wipe the dirt and soot that have built up on the exterior and interior of the muffler. During the cleaning process, it will be a good idea to wear latex gloves.
  • Use a Special Cleaner: With an exhaust or auto cleaner, clean the outside and inside of the muffler. This will be very helpful with removing hard water spots and carbon deposit.
  • Scrub: With 0000 steel wool, scrub tough spots and buildup, taking extra care not to scratch the muffler.
  • Dry and Polish: Lastly, dry the muffler, preferably with a micro fiber towel. You may then shine the muffler if you feel it is looking dull.
